The Bills-Let Em Run [Fusion/Gypsy/jazz/Bluegrass]

The Bills began as The Bill Hilly Band in 1996, when Canadian jazz/rock musician Marc Atkinson and some friends took up acoustic instruments and began exploring folk tunes from around the world. Along the line, Marc became impressed by the powerful singing and deep knowledge of traditional music held by one of his jazz guitar students, Chris Frye, and he was soon added to the group. The band began to fearlessly blend many styles into their music: choro music from Brazil, gypsy jazz, hoedown and French Canadian sounds, sea chanteys, classical music and even an occasional Broadway musical classic. Based in Victoria, British Columbia, they became the rage of western Canada for their virtuosity and showmanship. They soon began to perform across the rest of the nation and the US where they were the consistent smash hit of every summer music festival at which they appeared.

Drawing inspiration from all over the world, "Let Em Run" is a witch's brew and fusion of bluegrass, jazz, ragtime, Latin American and Gypsy influences with a sound all its own. The opening "Overture" gives a theatrical snapshot of the many musical styles of "Let Em Run." From the bluegrass-inspired "Hello" to the haunting instrumental "When the Bucket Runs Dry" to the several inventive songs written by Chris Frye, the Bills display both tight vocal arrangements and fierce virtuosic instrumentals. They transcend musical boundaries with such ease and fluidity that it is easy to see why the band is creating a buzz across such a broad spectrum of music fans. This is their finest work.
