Nizar Rohana - Sard [Palestina]

Nizar Rohana is a prominent Oud player in the Palestinian musical scene. Rohana was born in the village of ‘Esefya on Mount Carmel in 1975. He began his musical education at an early age and playing the Oud by the age of fifteen, and in 1996 he moved to Jerusalem to take up academic studies. Focusing his research on the music of the great Egyptian composer Mohammad el-Qasabji, Rohana completed his Masters degree in Musicology 2006.
Together with an intensive activity on the local musical scene, during the last ten years Rohana has been performing in many countries around the world such as Japan, Marroco, Egypt, United States, Spain, England, Italy, France, Denmark, Germany, Holland, Belguim, Portugal and Switzerland.

SARD:
Nizar Rohana launched his first music album "Sard" (Narration in Arabic) in May 2008. In it the authenticity of the oud language is highly maintained, yet refreshing new expressions and rhythms are achieved through the dialogues with other instruments such as the double bass, the qanoun and the percussion.

The album includes five pieces composed by Nizar Rohana: Sard, Umm El Zeinat, Iraq, Ajam, and Hijaz. In addition, two familiar tunes were specially arranged for this recording: Sama’i Farahfaza by Jamil Al-Tanbouri (arranged by Khaled Jubran), and Ya rayeh sawb bladi by Ahmad Qaabour.

The participating musicians on the album are Nizar Rohana – oud, Hani Assad – percussion, Geoffroi Delori – double bass, Waffa Zaghal – qanoun and Khaled Jubran – musical supervision. This production was partly financed by Cultural Resource (Egypt) in collaboration with Al-Urmawi Centre (Palestine).

Afel Bocoum & Alkibar - Niger [Mali]

Afel Bocoum (born 1955) is a musician from Mali, noted as a singer and guitarist. He began his career as a member of Ali Farka Toure's group ASCO, and Toure is often regarded as his mentor. Both men come from the town of Niafunke on the River Niger, and are members of the Sonrai people. Bocoum is an agricultural advisor by profession.

His debut album, Alikibar, was recorded in an abandoned school near Niafunke over the course of six days - the same session and location where the Ali Farka Toure's Niafunke was recorded. In fact, Ali Farka and Bocoum appeared on each other's albums. Bocoum and Ali Farka's record producer believed that transporting the group to a recording studio overseas would diminish the quality of the music.
In 2002 Bocoum collaborated with the
Blur singer Damon Albarn on the successful Mali Music album, and the two played together in concerts in London and Denmark.
In 2006, Afel Bocoum and his band, Alkibar, released their second full-length album
Niger on the Belgian label Contre-Jour. The sounds of Niger rely heavily on the traditional instruments njarka and njurkel, which give this collection of new materials a more traditional, and distinctively different quality from their excellent Western debut, Alkibar. Niger opens with a heartfelt and stirring tribute to his late mentor, Ali Farka Toure (Wikipedia)

Bassekou Kouyate & Ngoni Ba - Segu Blue [Mali,Ngoni]

Texto: Nano Amenedo
