The band was founded in Rybinsk in 1987 by Dmitry Sokolov. Nowadays folk stylizations are definitely more popular in the West than in Russia, so 'Sed'maya Voda' can gain much more popularity in Europe and America than in their own country. Folk tunes, folk instruments (balalaika, accordion, psaltery, tambourine, pipe along with more habitual guitar and violin), folk voices (Marina Sokolova and Mitya Kuznetsov) make this band deliberately russian. 'Sed'maya Voda' sings folk russian songs, but also composes music for well-known texts written by famous russian poets - Esenin, Samoylov, although new versions of 'Klyon' by Esenin and 'Griboedov Waltz' by Bashlachev seem too stylized. Sound of 'God's Ball' (a song by Alexander Vertinsky, russian singer of the beginning of the century), is very unusual: there is no sign of refinement peculiar to Vertinsky manner.
