Balkansemblet won a Norwegian Grammy for the album Balkansemlet” in 1985. Following two decades of performing and two albums, the band took an extended break in the mid 1990’s. In 2005 the band was revived and now consists of two original members and three new, creative and talented musicians. The first period of the Balkansemblet adventure was a journey of discovery through the music and culture of the Balkans.
This resulted in the albums “Balkan Samlet” and “Kvikk Sand”, several radio and TV performances, and many concerts in Norway and Scandinavia. Since the 1980’s the band has been progressing on what could be called a journey home. Following a period of exploration and learning, the music has become free and open, andcontains much more improvisation. A large majority of the songs on the new album are composed by the band. Rhythms, scales, and sounds of the Balkans remain present, as is the atmosphere , audaciousness and spontaneity.
