Ondekoza is the oldest and internationally most famous group that performs with taiko-drumming. Since over 25 years the musicians (men and women) combine meditation and running with music played on several traditional japanese drums and other instruments.
When the Ondekoza director and founder Tagayasu Den died in 2001, the legendary Taiko group did reduce its activities. In 2003 the "Devil Drummers" came back with a new line-up and a new album combining again long-distance-running and Taiko-Drumming in a unique way.
Since 1986 Tropical Music has released on its label Nektar already five albums, which have sold a total amount of over 50.000 units. Running and drumming are combined in an almost perfect way in the group Ondekoza, as this group was the first ensemble starting in 1969 on Sado Island and becoming worldfamous in 1975 shocking the audience of the Boston Marathon, when they jumped on stage for their performance just after running the 26 miles. The new Ondekoza line-up just participated in the 2004 edition of the Boston Marathon and performed some concerts in the USA. Between 1990 and 1993 the group toured through the USA running a total distance of 14.910 kilometers, performing over 300 concerts and in 1998 the group started its "Long Journey" (12.500 km) in China looking for completion before the 2008 Olympics in Peking.
