The Afro-Indian Project [Ravi]

There is a natural fusion of ideas from one continent to another--Africa and India are separated by a body of water but joined by a fusion of ideas and arts. Here, Ravi and his fellow musicians mix the sounds of African Kora harp-lute with African and Indian drums and other instruments. The sound is a perfect mix of both worlds.

Ravi plays the African kora or harp-lute, Hossam Ramzy the Egyptian tabla drums, Bhattcharya on Indian tabla, andT the addition of some fine artists on santoor and bass. The result is an engaging fusion of African and Indian sound, very contemporary and relaxed. If you liked Andreas Vollenweider (Behind The Gardens, Behind The Wall, Under The Tree..) you are going to hear a sort of tribute to him here in the first cut "After the Rains." This homage to Vollenweider's breakthrough use of harp in New Age music is familiar but newly-created all the same. The rest of the CD is just as good--lots of great tunes. I enjoyed the mysterious "Himalaya"--it includes the "launeddas" or Sardinian shepherd's horn (I suppose to imitate the sound of the Tibetan shawm, rather like an oboe.) Singing bells and drums create a dreamy, lofty sound that takes you away to high mountains. Another great song here is "Forest of Bliss" which is the translation of the name of the city of Benares. It evokes the ancient holy city, the tempo is as if you were walking slowly through the streets, stopping to see the extraordinary sights--hearing temple music seeping out from behind a hidden door.
