Zazou - Merle Noir (2007)

Zazou is a popular Seattle, Washington-based sextet featuring accordion, lead and harmony vocals, string bass, rhythm & lead guitars and percussion. Their repertoire, including original material, is inspired by the sophisticated melodies of French Jazz Manouche, Parisian Musette, Latin American popular songs and American Swing Jazz. Drawing together a multitude of musical influences and incorporating the driving European "string swing" rhythm, Zazou pays homage to music of the past while creating an original sound that is contemporary and exciting.

The members of Zazou are Ryan Hoffman on lead and rhythm guitar, Johnny Calcagno and Jeff Smith on rhythm guitar, Hugh Sutton on accordion and vocals , Ms. Jessica on vocals and string bass and sometimes JosephMascorella on drums and percussion. The six are experienced musicians who have played with numerous fine players and acts around the country.

In addition to their diverse musical repertoire, Zazou also puts on a entertaining show that encourages audience participation through humor, magic and playful banter.
With a debut album entitled Djangolotry, Zazou delivers an infectious blend of Django Reinhardt, Stephane Grappelli, and the Hot Club of France with a fun, sophisticated blend of original and cover songs sung in English and French.
Their recent album, Merle Noir, extends their brand of "Tango meets Swing meets Musette meets Samba meets Pepe le pu meets Clara Bow meets Mr. Bojangles in a hilltop garden in Atlantis" jazzy melodies.
