Toires – Majmar

Dada Music has been working extensively on bringing sounds with an electronic edge to discerning listeners in India since the time it came into being. Another impressive effort in this direction is the release of Majmar, a collection of tracks which have been worked upon and added with a signature touch by Toires, a French artist who has worked on numerous World Music compilations.

The album starts ambitiously with Lahore Connection by Prem Joshua, with spare instrumentation on the sitar, which flows effortlessly as he takes up the flute next to create an aura, which mellifluously engulfs you into a charm whose origins lie deep within the Orient.

The Orient paves the way for the Mediterranean next, as the exceptionally gifted Omar Faruk Tekbilek launches you into a percussive environment to the accompaniment of delicate strings and wind instruments on Don’t Cry My Love, which has a definite melancholic quality to wring your heart, and as if that wasn’t enough Irina Mikhailova, the East European enchantress casts a spell on Dereye with her vocals with wails that are sure to make your heart skip. The overall feel is ambient, and is apt to set the mood for any party you just intend to chill out at and not shake a leg.
