Sound Of The World- Beyond The Horizon[Varios Artistas, World Music]

Gillett has been digging deep into music collections and artists’ works since 1962 and has been DJing on the radio since 1972. More recently, artists from Mali to Iraq, Uganda to China have been gaining popularity with the British public and sales in the UK have increased by approximately 20% or more in the last year and a half. From Manu Chao, Tuareg nomads Tinariwen (who appeared on last year’s compilation) to South African (and BBC Awards for World Music nominee) Simphiwe Dana and one of Africa’s most influential singers Youssou N’ Dour (and not forgetting the now tragically deceased Andy Palacio, Madilu System and Lucky Dube), music from all sections of the planet has been proving a delight to listeners in festivals and homes across Europe and further afield. Gillett has, yet again, chosen some superb tracks on this compilation from an array of international artists – some well known and some not-so-well-known (and some of which are not even available on download).

In this, the ninth album in the series, Beyond the Horizon presents the listener with 34 artists from 28 different countries on two discs. As well as the bigger named stars (including Orchestra Baobab and Toumani Diabate as well as some of those mentioned above), there is a variety of innovative and eloquent songs featured including the driving percussive rhythms and vocal serenity from Lebanese singer Nancy Ajram, the rich tones of the Uzbek singer Severa with contemporary electro backing on a track from her latest album Sen. You can only marvel at the incredible playing on the valiha (a Madagascan multi-stringed instrument) by Rajery who despite playing an instrument that requires virtuoso technique with two hands plays exquisitely on the track ‘Mandehandeha’ from his album Sofera…despite having only one hand! There are endearing bird chirps on the track by the Mozambique group Massukos and some powerful political discourse from Trinidadian band Kobo Town. Cleverly blending various styles are Western guitarist Justin Adams who plays with traditional Gambian instrumentalist Juldeh Camara and a remarkable tune by Almasäla that combines Catalan vocals with spacey synths and raucous jungle breakbeats. Based in California, Dengue Fever’s unique take on surf music from the 60s fronted by high-pitched vocalist from Phnom Penh, Cambodia, Chlom Nimol, is fascinating. Also featured are Franco-Algerian singer Soha, the oud Trio Joubran from Palestine, Dadawa from China, winner of the Tom.com award as ‘the most influential woman in Chinese music’, and many more.

  2. Te agradezco por el disco, soy un gran admirador de este DJ de la BBC londinense. Efectivamente Marhall, esta es la compilación para el 2008. Me preguntaba si usted tendría el álbum del 2007 llamado "Sound of the World". Tengo dos años recorriendo la red y no he tenido suerte. Gracias de nuevo.

I really apreciate you for this record, I am a big fan of this DJ for the BBC in London. Indeed Marhall, this is the compilation for 2008. I was wondering if you would have the 2007 album called "Sound of the World". I have two years traveling around the network and have had no luck. Thank you again.
