Ahmed Ma Hlad - Magadan

Ahmed má hlad ("Ahmed is Hungry") is part of the wave of European bands reviving and drawing on Balkan and East European folk music, blending traditional melodies with more experimental arrangements. (A style of music first popularized in the Czech Republic by Čechomor.)
The group performs folk music from Moravia, Poland, Ukraine, Bulgaria, Serbia, Croatia, and Macedonia, not only singing these songs in their original languages, but also filtering them through the rawer, less restrained expression of rock and punk.

The vibrant contrast between male and female voices, amplified by the background chorus and rich instrumentation (clarinet, accordion, saxophone, drums and electric guitar), creates upbeat, fun tunes that get the crowd hopping at every show.
Ahmed má hlad has released two albums, Salám a Lajka (2002) and Magadan (2004), the latter referring to a town in northeastern Russia that's the setting of a fictional story featured in one of their songs and also the destination of a real trip undertaken by a band member.
