Dunja Knebl is an acoustic/folk singer from Croatia. She was born in Zagreb, Croatia, but also lived in the USA, Indonesia and Russia. After completing the studies of English and Russian she worked most of her life as a translator and language teacher and sang folk songs to her friends. She began performing professionally in 1993, and released her first solo album in 1994, an MC with 12 songs collected by Florijan Andrašec, one of the people she mentioned as having a great influence to her music. In 1997 she was nominated for music award Porin (the Croatian equivalent of Grammy) in the Best singer category. So far she released eight albums and appeared on five other compilations. The majority of the songs she sings are from Croatia (especially the region Međimurje), but also from USA, Macedonia, Russia. She is quoted saying that her greatest achievement is the inclusion of her her album Iz globline srca to the London-based A Rough Guide to World Music where she is recommended as an introduction to ethno-music from Croatia. Her albums regularly appear on Best Songs and Albums of the Year in leading Croatian magazines.
Additionally, she translated several Croatian cook-books to English language, and the biographical monodrama Why I became a singer at the age of 47 or the fear of cloning was performed by the singer over two dozen times since 1997. Dunja Knebl is most noted for her crystal-clear voice and very simple music arrangements, often only with improvised instruments or even without any. Songs she sings are slow, mellow and often sad and melancholic. Most of all she likes to record songs she has never heard.

KATALENA In the chapter of the contemporary Slovene popular music, Katalena needs to be addressed as no more and no less than a phenomenon. The story of this urban band begins in an idyllic village in the Southeast of Slovenia, where, in the summer of 2001, a group of six enthusiasts unearthed archival folklore material and rejuvenated its rustic image in line with their art rock, funk, jazz and blues pedigree and with their own integral youthful vision that was as much philosophical as it was musical. The feedback from those privileged enough to encounter with the six-some music in its prime, soon outgrew the original idea of a one off experiment and in the months and years to follow, sons and daughters of Katalena took the stages of the most prominent festivals, concert halls and clubs home and abroad by a storm. In five years time the band gave birth to three brainchildren (Z)godbe/Stories (2002), Babje leto/Indian summer (2004) and Kmeka ohcet/Country wedding (2006). Albums received great attention among music writers that are up to this day still unable to categorize them, turned the existing folkloristic theories upside down and converted a great number of doubting Thomases into folk music fans. Combining best of the Slovene traditional music, carefully selected from the archives, songbooks and old vinyl records with solid rock rhythms, funky groove and enviable arranging skills it creates a unique post-folk rock style that presents the music legacy of Slovenias regions in an utterly new light. Fused with dynamic and invigorating electrical instruments, which caress the enchanting singing, it is transformed on the stage into a dance and sound performance that mesmerises even the most musically pampered ears. Katalena is the most inspirational voice of the 21st century Slovene folk music soundtrack. /Katarina Juvancic//

Shot by legendary cinematographer Albert Maysles, this dynamic musical documentary follows five Gypsy bands from four countries who unite for the Gypsy Caravan as they take their show around North America for a six-week tour, astounding every audience they meet. Their musical styles range from flamenco to brass band, Romanian violin to Indian folk. And with humor and soul in their voices, they celebrate the best in Gypsy culture and the diversity of the Romani people in an explosion of song and dance. As the film follows the amazing performances and behind-the-scenes action from the tour created by World Music Institute, we discover the real lives of these musicians. We visit Macedonia, Romania, India and Spain, meet their families and see what music brings to their lives. The tales of these characters are woven between their performances - allowing us to understand and celebrate Romani culture and the prejudice of their shared ancestry. The "Gypsy Caravan" tour extravaganza features performances by Macedonian diva and "Queen of the Gypsies" ESMA REDZEPOVA, traditional Indian folk troupe MAHARAJA, Romanian FANFARE CIOCARLIA, the violin wizardry of Romanian group TARAF DE HAIDOUKS and the ANTONIO EL PIPA FLAMENCO ENSEMBLE.The sounds of Roma (Gypsy), a culture interminably misunderstood, oppressed and stigmatized, are increasingly heard on the dance floor, and have attracted fans like Johnny Depp, who is in the film. TIME Magazine declares, "Gypsy music is escaping its 'ghetto' in Romania to become a worldwide sensation."Tribeca Film Festival's Steven Snyder writes, "Given extraordinary access to a world known by few outsiders, Dellal takes full advantage by reaching out to the community's key players, including a violin virtuoso who also must beg for change in order to keep his family afloat." This film is a celebration that will leave your toes tapping, your heart pumping and your soul uplifted by a glorious journey that is the Gypsy Caravan.
