With the Kelebek (The Butterfly) soundtrack, film producer Mahmut Bengi has brought Brian Keane and Omar Faruk Tekbilek together once again to create the music to this mystical and tragic story. The result is remarkable and moving. The score to Kelebek effortlessly flows from East to West, from orchestral score to traditional Turkish music, and into electronic sound design. The music moves just as effortlessly between moods, from mystical to tragic to suspense to folkloric or romantic. Whether it is the fusion of Jazz and red hot Middle Eastern musicianship of "On the Move", the beautiful melodic and harmonic East West mixtures of "Yusuf's Theme", and "Zeynep's Romance", the Turkish folk meets American roots music of "Teacher", the simple and honest oud and guitar collaboration on "Brother to Brother", the new age orchestra and spiritual Ney of "Butterfly", the moving and tragic "Yusuf Prays/Lost Souls" that employs Omar's older brother Haci Ahmet Tekbilek on Duduk with an orchestral adagio, Omar's haunting vocals over a multi layered Harmonium and Glass bed in "Losing Hope", the bizarre and wonderful combination of Richard Hunter's amazing harmonica playing with traditional Middle Eastern folk music in "Street Fair" (based on the Azeri folk song "Menim Canimsan"), or the Dervish updated to hip hop/ electronic trance "Deep Blue", Brian and Omar continue to push the boundaries of musical tradition while simultaneously demonstrating a respect and affection for those traditions and their spiritual origins.
Now in their mid fifties, Brian and Omar have continued growing in their own world's as prominant master musicians. This special two CD soundtrack album for Kelebek (The Butterfly) serves notice that their friendship and musical collaboration also continues to grow, and is truly enduring.

It seems to be a great summer this one. Analogik presents their debut album after some hard working years on the road well, the sea and in the studio hide-away to record the statement of their adventurous music. ‘Søens Folk’ showcases a genre-breaking posture of world music and dubby deepness, freshly mixed with a boatman’s call. The title is a grandiose salute to all proud Men of the Sea. This is truly a redefinition of ‘pirate material’. Denmark’s ‘second capital’ Århus harboured their first two short playing EPs (released exclusively on 10" vinyl by Auditory Designs) and was a well-kept secret amongst DJs and nu jazz connoisseurs. By now the city once again lays ground to their fables from the World Seas. Analogik has settled as a quartet and invited additional guests for this first full cycle. Due to the foursome’s different backgrounds, their music isn’t easily categorised. Asger Strandby is on turntables with scratch’n’efx and armed with a laptop, he also triggers diminutive electronic beats; Jesper Kobberø’s charming guitar melodies is backed up by his flute and air organ; Theis Bror blows a precise and relaxed saxophone; Magnus Damgaard’s bassline is powerful and thick as hell just like his aged beard. Jazz is what brought them together as a band in 2004 but their music reflects on so much more: Dub, electronica, funk, bossa nova and tango is the carefully welted sounds from the Global Village. This is true to the very innovative spirit of Auditory Designs. The first two releases have received massive support on the international downbeat scene, rotating on the turntables of big DJs who don’t need any further introduction; Mixmaster Morris, Quantic, Guadi and Japans finest; Fantastic Plastic Machine. The second release "Analogik For Perlehøns" was nominated as release of the year by Danish World Music Awards.

rhythm harvest - album reviews On his third release, percussionist-extraordinaire Michael Pluznick finds all the pieces meshing perfectly in a dynamite brew of Haitian, Caribbean and West African influences. This animated release features male and female vocals, guitar, trumpet, keyboards and, above all, Pluznick on over 20 rhythm instruments. Joel Lindheimer plays guitar and charango, Robert Powell pedal steel guitar, and Kim Atkinson adds extra touches of percussion on several tracks, while lead vocals (often of a call-and-response nature) are shared between YagbŽ "Oba-llu" Onilu, Lygia Ferra and Pedro DeJesus. Highlights are the swaying "Le Bolero Haitien," "Mozambique," based on a Cuban dance craze in the '60s, the catchy "Rumbacito," and "Giant Step," from traditional music that pays homage to the mountain spirit of the Yoruba people of western Nigeria. While the band is undeniably hot, it's Pluznick who holds the reigns, leading his group through complex, dynamic polyrhythms in this fruitful Rhythm

If you have been looking for a CD with music from Mongolia to round out your world roots collection, I'd recommend Zazal by Egschiglen, a group formed in 1991 by a handful of instrumental students at the Ulaan Baator Conservatory in the capital of Mongolia. This CD contains 13 tracks, including both traditional and contemporary works. It has been four years since the group's previous release, Gobi. Much of this time has been spent in research as well as travel between Mongolia and Southern Germany, where Zazal was recorded. The instruments on Zazal includes the morin khuur, a horse-head violin that is played like a cello. The yoochin is an instrument of the dulcimer family. The ih khuur provides bass while the tobshuur is a two-string lute.

Al-Yaman is the Arabic name for the Republic of Yemen. Some say it means blessing and prosperity (al-yumn), others say it means on the right hand side of the Kaaba (yumna). The right hand side is a symbol of good fortune for Arabians, and this is in agreement with Arabia Felix which is the old geographer's name for the country. And we're lucky to have the group Al-Yaman from Prague. Singer Ashwaq Abdulla Kulaib came from Aden to study in the Czechian capital in 1990 and she stayed. She had been guest singer with Hypnotix before, here she is in the centre. Right by her side is Ales Hyvnar (Al-esh) who is the band's composer and keyboard player. Furthermore sharing the band experience, Jonathan Omer is an Israeli drummer, Bashar Ashhab a Palestinian darbuka player, Jan Hais a Czech bass player, and Tomas Reindl a multi-talent on tabla, didgeridoo and percussion. Al-Yaman is inspired by popular and traditional songs from the Arabic world, mostly of Yemen. They are fusing acoustic instruments and electronics, traditional tunes and modern dance rhythms and elements - and to great effect, dancers and listeners alike. And if that wasn't modern enough, two tracks had been remixed by Hypnotix and Transglobal Underground. Sounds from 1001 Nights as you never heard it before.

Alkinoos Ioannidis (Greek: Αλκίνοος Ιωαννίδης; born September 19, 1969) is a Greek-Cypriot composer, lyricist, singer and orchestrator.
He was born in Nicosia on 19 September 1969. His artistic family, with a painter father and poet brother was a source of inspiration for him. He first wanted to study drums, but couldn't due to the lack of a drum teacher in Nicosia. Instead, he studied guitar.
For the first 20 years of his life, he lived in a Nicosia suburb. After his military service, he went off to Greece to study theatre. He also entered the Philosophical School of Athens, which he later gave up. He was more successful in his theatre studies where he played some major roles in well known Greek tragedies such as Alcestis.
At the age of 23 he recorded his first album called Stin Agora Tou Kosmou (Greek: Στην Αγορά Του Κόσμου, In The World's Market) with lyrics and music written by Nikos Zoudiaris. This demo tape eventually reached the hands of a well known singer, Dimitra Galani. She instantly became fond of their music and Alkinoos' voice and helped them get a record deal.
Alkinoos and Zoudiaris followed with another album called Opos Mistika Kai Isicha (Greek: Οπως Μυστικά Και Ήσυχα, As Secretly and Quietly). Both albums turned gold.
