Trilok Gurtu & The Frikyiwa Family - Farakala

Trilok Gurtu nació en Bombay dentro de una familia muy musical. Su padre toco el sitar y su madre es una cantante clásica de gran popularidad y enorme influencia. Trilok traspasó fronteras enseguida.Se trasladó a Europa y tocó con Don Cherry. En 1984 se enroló con el grupo Oregón primero y con el formado violinista L.Shankar después. Allí compartió escenario con Jan Garbarek o Zakir Hussain.

La labor más creativa la desarrolló con el trío de John McLaughlin entre 1988 y 1992 con quien grabó dos excelentes álbumes, "Live at the Royal Festival Hall" y "Compact Jazz".
Tras innumerables colaboraciones formó su propio grupo, The Glimpse en 1996 consiguiendo enseguida los elogios más calurosos. Con The Glimpse grabó un disco homónimo en 1997 que supuso el inicio de un camino rico y original orientado hacia los modernos ritmos étnicos. Su siguiente disco "Kathak", editado en 1998, es una obra maestra donde se exponen los contactos ancestrales entre el flamenco y la música tradicional de la India.

Dos años después, Trilok Gurtu, nos da a conocer otra propuesta exuberante, "African Fantasy", un trabajo que es mucho más que fantasía sobre ese continente, convirtiéndose en un derroche de energía y creatividad que sobrepasa fronteras. El corte "Rajasthan" describe un desierto muy exótico de donde proceden algunos de los ejemplos más antiguos del folclore indio, mientras que "DJ Didgeridoo" está basado en el instrumento de los aborígenes australiano procesado a ritmo de discoteca global. En "Africa Fantasy", aparece la sugerente voz de Angelique Kidji y nos introduce en el mundo del Africa negra.Otras colaboraciones destacadas en "African Fantasy" son las de las voces de Sabine Kabongo de Zap Mama, Esmeralda Sciascia, Jaya Deba u Oumou Sangará.

Here's an expert collection of both North American and European artists playing their Balkan cards. Judging by these selections, the Balkan appeal is rooted dually in the music's speed and instrumental varieties. The Hungry March Band is a 25-piece Brass March Band based in New York City. Put on your dancing shoes and break out the fancy threads because we’ve got the party going on - a blazing parade of flesh, blood, steel, brass and wood. We are the music of the people!
Our musical repertoire consists of original compositions written by band members as well as scores selected from our multi-cultural world community. These songs draw from New Orleans street bands, European brass traditions,
Gypsy/Roma classics, Indian wedding bands, the jazz world, and the global community of NYC. The band is an ever evolving musical experiment influenced and inspired by Brooklyn’s backyard with Latin flavor, punk rock noise, hip hop beats and music of the streets. Our discography includes three self-produced CD’s. The most recent, “Critical Brass,” was recorded at Loho Studios, NYC, in the Spring of 2004, merely days after returning from a very successful European tour. Our second release, “On the Waterfront” (2003), was recorded in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, and dedicated to the hallowed grounds upon which the tunes were wrought. The virgi debut, ”Hungry March Band Official Bootleg” (2001), consists of a series of live recordings and is considered an historical reference for the band’s exercises in wind, percussion, and fluid dynamics.

Berroguetto - Viaxe por Urticaria

"Viaxe por Urticaria", su segundo disco, editado en 1999 corroboró la energía creativa y renovadora de la propuesta musical de Berrogüetto. El título del álbum está inspirado en el nombre de un libro de Etienne Cabet de mediados de siglo 19, llamado "Viaje por Icaria" donde el autor trataba de plasmar lo que para él sería un mundo ideal y que mas de un siglo y medio después, pese a haber conseguido algunas de los beneficios materiales de los que hablaba el escritor, se sigue careciendo de valores espirituales como la igualdad, la solidaridad y la fraternidad. Este trabajo sorprendió, además, por la imagen gráfica de la portada: unas fotografías donde podía verse a los siete músicos cubiertos de barro, impregnados con tierra de su tierra.

Evanthia Reboutsika - A Touch Of Spice

Evanthia Reboutsika was born November 6, 1958 and raised in Kato Achaia, Patras along with her brother Ploutarchos and her sisters Maria and Ioanna. Their father was the owner of a cinema hall. Evanthia started studying the violin at the age of 6 at the Conservatory of Patras. Soon the three sisters and their brother form a string quartet and tour through out Greece and abroad. In 1970 Evanthia moved to Athens where she finished her studies at the Conservatory of Athens and at the Hellenic Conservatory under the supervision of some of the finest tutors in Greece.

As a violinist she collaborated with many important Greek composers and singers while in 1979 she graduated from Ecole Normale De Music of Paris and returned back to Greece. In 1992, along with the composer Panayiotis Kalantzopoulos, she composed the album “Sti limni me tis paparounes” for Kristy Stasinopoulou. In 1995 she met with Yiannis Kotsiras, a much promising singer back then, and with Panayiotis Kalantzopoulos and lyricist Aris Davarakis they wrote songs for the album “Athoos enochos”.

Her collaboration with Yiannis Kotsiras continued in his second album where Evanthia was the sole composer of the album “Mono ena fili” and Eleni Zioga wrote the lyrics. The album became very soon double platinum. In the meantime she composed the music for various TV series soundtracks such as “Esi apofasizeis”, “Prodosia”, “Athina Thessaloniki”, “Aithousa tou thronou”, “Petrina Liondaria” and many others.

Her next album was mainly instrumental and was released in 1998, entitled “To asteri kai I efchi.” It includes collaborations with singers such as the soprano Sonia Theodoridou, Elli Paspala and Caroline Lavelle. Even though instrumental records are not very popular in Greece the album became gold.

In May 2000 she released the follow-up to “To asteri kai I efchi”, bearing the title “Mikres istories”, another instrumental album, a magnificent piece of pure music where lyricism meets reality. Eleftheria Arvanitaki sings two of the songs, with lyrics by Lina Nikolakopoulou and Eleni Zioga while the soprano Mariana Rigaki sings an aria. Her latest album “Ine diki mas I zoi mas” was released in December 2000. It is the third time she collaborated with Yiannis Kotsiras. Aris Davarakis wrote the lyrics.

Evanthia Reboutsika - A Touch Of Spice

Evanthia Reboutsika was born November 6, 1958 and raised in Kato Achaia, Patras along with her brother Ploutarchos and her sisters Maria and Ioanna. Their father was the owner of a cinema hall. Evanthia started studying the violin at the age of 6 at the Conservatory of Patras. Soon the three sisters and their brother form a string quartet and tour through out Greece and abroad. In 1970 Evanthia moved to Athens where she finished her studies at the Conservatory of Athens and at the Hellenic Conservatory under the supervision of some of the finest tutors in Greece.

As a violinist she collaborated with many important Greek composers and singers while in 1979 she graduated from Ecole Normale De Music of Paris and returned back to Greece. In 1992, along with the composer Panayiotis Kalantzopoulos, she composed the album “Sti limni me tis paparounes” for Kristy Stasinopoulou. Tienen tres discos editados, siendo el último "Incógnita alquimia"(2006) una auténtica maravilla. el disco se escucha de un tirón, mezclando las canciones tradicionales portuguesas con nickelharpa, percusiones mediterráneas, guitarras eléctricas... y como no, la voz de Joana Negrao. Es un gran placer que desde el país vecino se hagan propuestas de este tipo, y que se huya un poco del recurrente fado, la música portuguesa es mucho más que eso, e Incógnita Alquimia lo demuestra de una forma elocuente.
